Cycling Colours (*NSFW*)

I am a huge fan of bright coloured cycling jerseys. And helmets, and bikes and socks and even shoes! To prove my point, here is a grainy shot of me leaving home for a ride this morning.

I should be able to be spotted from the ISS. You will notice though that I have black knicks on. Everyone, even pro riders should wear black knicks.

Why I hear you ask.

Exhibit A your honor.

That was posted on the Twitters today at some stage. Thanks to Dan Wuori

If you want another example, Google Polish cycling team and get ready for a frontal assault.

Don’t the people designing these kits realise their cyclists are going to be giving the world a fair idea of which side of their trousers they dress?

Please, black knicks only. I am begging people in all sections of cycling apparel. For the love of god.

Well Done Dickhead

I got up early this morning to get out in the fresh cool air and do a lazy 30 odd kilometres before work.

Normally, I don’t get too annoyed by dickhead drivers, but this morning, this one managed to piss me right off.

The reason I was so riled by this idiot, was that just 10 seconds prior, I looked over my shoulder to see how much traffic was around. I did this because I could see a smashed bottle up ahead. When I looked, a blue ute and this idiot were right in the middle of the lane.

Obviously, this waste of oxygen decided to give me a 80kph fly by at close quarters. Sadly, his number plate is blurred, and I missed it because my glasses had some fog on them, so i can’t track the idiot down. Check it out.

You can click the next photo for a larger view of just how much road he had to play with.

Now, he is probably closer than a metre away, but it is one reason that even a metre is not enough in my book. He is doing 80kph if he is doing the speed limit. I am doing 25kph. Imagine if he misjudges and clips me, what will happen. He will drive off unharmed, I could very well be dead.

Given the video I just posted, I thought this was a good example of the dickheads on the road.

Once I had calmed down, it was a beautiful start to the day.

Must See for Motorists and Cyclists.

I will just leave this here.

Cafe Roo Bay

Here at Non Pro Cycling, we like to think we specialize in bringing you the most beautiful spots in the most beautiful sport. Whether it be a beautiful piece of tarmac that you can attack to avenge a crappy week at work. Or maybe some singletrack that lets you go AWOL. Or even a fantastic local bike shop that always gets to the crux of the problem. We like to point them out.

Our first feature is a sleepy little spot to get your caffeine fix. If you crave good coffee, this is the place for you. Located in a stunning part of the world, the South Coast of NSW, Roo Bay is a secluded spot where the kangaroos can be seen every morning from the back deck of the cafe.

Roos at Dawn

If you are lucky, on special days, an enormous red kangaroo with the alias of Fatboy can be seen standing tall where the bush transitions to the beach.

If you love great coffee and stunning places to ride your bike, be it road, cyclocross or MTB, Roo Bay is ruby in the rough.

Boobs, Body Paint and Bridie.

Well that is a heading I never thought would be possible. But, there you go.

The cycling social media in Australia has gone troppo the past few days after a shop in Melbourne used some ladies sporting pretty much only a pair on knicks that would offer no protection at all, and a smear of paint.

I have seen some chatter about it, but wasn’t all that interested. Then I saw a tweet from Bridie O’Donnell this afternoon. I am a big fan of hers. We have chatted a few times on Twitter, but I doubt she’d know me from the next fat old bloke. This was what she said.

So, having just been for a ride, I thought I would give it a look. Here, you can too.

Bridie puts it far better than I could. I retweeted it and got a few interesting replies. Those replies got me thinking. The first thing resulted in this tweet.

For those not in the know, Specialized shops usually attach a premium to their prices. It isn’t up to me to say whether this is good or bad, but judging by the amount of their bikes I see around the Shoalhaven, they are doing ok.

The second thing that struck me, and Bridie touches on it, was the women doing it. Sexualising the sport. Good? Bad? I don’t know.

Now the way my feeble thinking box works is by putting myself in the position of these women. What, given the opportunity, would I do?

Now, this is really stretching my powers of imagination. Looks aren’t my strong point. Some quotes used to describe me include “he has a head like a dropped pie”, “a face like a beaten favourite”, “a face like a bashed crab” and on they go. As an apprentice, in my absolute prime as far as looks go, a mates mum described me as “not a handsome man, but he has a happy head”. Talk about a backhanded compliment!

So, you get my point. I am more Buscemi than Clooney.

What would I do if I was asked to bare my bits for money or fame? For me, I think a lot would have to do with the age I was asked, given the highly unlikely event that I held my pretend good looks.

As a brash 20 year old, I reckon I would have had my gear off a second after being asked. As a 30 year old, I probably would have waited for the photo shoot to disrobe. At 40, I would probably have declined the offer. So who am I to judge anyone that does have the opportunity.

But, is it the right way to market a new opening of a retail store? I have my doubts, and if some of the things I have read on Twiiter and FaceBook are any barometer, I am not alone. That said, they have generated so much chatter on social media, probably way more than if they had had a less controversial strategy, that despite the moral dilemna, you’d have to say it worked.

It takes a far greater mind than mine to tear it all apart and make sense of it, but I think more people than the current 136 should take a look at Bridie’s video. Also, for some background, check out Cycling Tips.

Kudos to Bridie.

What are your thoughts?
