Friday Video – A Bit Different This Week.

Late last week I dropped into the doctors to get him to have a look at my hand that I had managed to jam into the gate with the wheelbarrow. Long story.

Anyway, he sorted that out and I asked him why I was getting sore hips whilst doing intervals on the bike. We went through a few things and he thinks it was because I was trying to get my legs too close to the top tube. Something I was trying to do consciously. Basically, I am too fat to ride knees tucked right in. Thanks Doc.

We got chatting about cycling and the pitfalls of it. Huh? Yes, there are pitfalls it seems. I have since read all about shortened hamstrings, lower back issues, neck issues, the list goes on.

The upshot of this long introduction was the doctor told me my core was weak and that I needed to stretch more. He suggested yoga.

Good lord, me in yoga pants? Is lycra not bad enough?

So I hit the interwebs and stumbled upon this awesome set of videos at lululemon.com. A 12 part series of videos designed for cyclists.

They are all on YouTube, so for the techno savvy, you can download them and use most anywhere. Here is the first one of the 12.

Check them all out. Have a great weekend on the bike where ever you are.

Welcome to the SufferCell.

As those of you who follow me on Twitter with keen eyes would have seen, I tweeted last week about a pleasant surprise I got from a Twitter cycling buddy, Jason Brown. For those who aren’t part of the Twitterati, this is what I had to say.

This all came about when I Tweeted this…

Jason Brown got the good people at The Sufferfest involved in the conversation and before I knew it, he had arranged with David McQuillen at The Sufferfest to get me a copy of all 13 of their apparently awesome videos. As well as that, he spoke with Mark McTamany at CellBikes and arranged for me to loan a home trainer for an extended period! A brief email exchange with Mark and he has organised a JetBlack fluid trainer for me to loan.

To say I was dumbstruck is a slight under statement. I have never met Jason, although we do chat a bit on Twitter and I follow his blog, The Crankset, so we are virtual buddies I suppose. For him to organise such a terrific surprise is testament to the kinds of people you can meet online.

Since all this happened, Mark has shipped the trainer, which I expect tomorrow or Friday, and I have downloaded 26G of Sufferfest videos. I have had a look at a few of them, and have had my passport stamped, having arrived in Sufferlandria!

Not knowing a real lot about home trainers, I will be taking it easy the first couple of times I use it, just to make sure all is good in the land of Suffer.

Now, most people will know I am not a fan of the chest beating crew that seem to revel in the “hurt box” or “pain cave” or many other descriptors used to pump themselves up. Self harm isn’t something I go for. I have done a few interval sessions over the past few weeks and found them in no way pleasurable. That said, I can see why people do it. I have learned a lot about myself in the 15 or 20 minutes of 100+ cadence that I have done. I can see how it could make me a better cyclist, so I am going to give it a red hot go.

As a way of saying thanks to The Sufferfest and CellBikes, I am going to call the little area of the garage where I set up the home trainer, The SufferCell. I hope to spend many hours in there, making myself stronger and fitter.

So once again, I would like to thank Jason Brown, David McQuillen from The Sufferfest and Mark McTamany from CellBikes for their generosity.

I will do regular updates from the SufferCell and you can all laugh at me as I curse and whimper whilst going no where fast on my bike.

The Best Thing About Last Nights Mad Stage

Even though Michele Acquarone admitted it was too tough of a stage, it does give heart to us Non Pro Cyclists to see the pros pushing their bikes up a hill.

For me, the best part of the madness that was stage 6 can best be described in a picture.

Closely followed home by the hashtag used by Fabian Cancellara.

There is a rather lengthy YouTube up now. 41 minutes in is the fun part.

It is MY Bike!

I had a question thrown at me on Twitter the other day that I had no idea about, so I thought I would investigate. I was asked “Where can you get the personalised name decals like the pros?” Ha. I have seen them before, but didn’t know a thing about it, so I did some looking around. Searching bike forums and Reddit, a name kept popping up. Flandria Bikes. There were others mentioned, but all had negative comments. Flandria was the only one I saw that had nothing but positive feedback.

I had a quick email exchange with Adam Longworth from Flandria bikes and the order arrived 5 days later.

I put them on the bike this afternoon, and this is what they look like.

And the Flandria sticker looked so cool I put that on as well.

These are a great little addition to anyone’s bike to give it a little more flair. They come in a few different designs and the ordering process is easy.

Thanks to Adam at Flandria for the excellent service.

An Interesting Helmet for Those Having HRM Issues

Are you one of those people who just can’t seem to get a chest strap heart rate monitor (HRM) to work? Well here is an interesting helmet being developed and now looking at being crowd sourced.

LifeBEAM is proud to present SMART –
The world’s first smart cycling helmet with an integrated heart rate sensor, allowing real time, accurate, hassle-free heart-rate monitoring without using a chest strap!

LifeBEAM SMART Cycling Helmet from Headstart on Vimeo.

It is an interesting concept and I will be keeping an eye on it.

Read more about it on their indiegogo page.

I’m no fan of MTBs, but even I would love to have a crack at this. Looks great and well shot!

If life gets boring…. German downhill star Andreas Sieber and his team mate Julian Gerhardt had the ultimate adrenaline kick at the bob run in Winterberg (GER). The channel was an extraordinary location for riding the new Radon Slide 130 29" and the Radon Swoop 175! Check this stunning mountainbike action here!
