Amstel Gold, Recapping the Recaps

Here we go with a recap of the recaps floating around the interwebs.

Cyclingnews.com has their report here.

Enrico Gasparotto (Astana Pro Team) won a thrilling Amstel Gold Race, timing his sprint to perfection atop the Cauberg, to win ahead of Jelle Vanendert (Lotto Belisol Team) and Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale).

The Inrng.com had this to say in his column.

A thrilling finale with tension all the way to the final metres. Philippe Gilbert has eased up and Oscar Freire has been caught. Now Jelle Vanendert and Peter Sagan sprint for the line but behind them Enrico Gasparotto of Astana starts to accelerate. The Italian tracked the leaders up the final climb and timed his sprint to perfection to surge past in the last 20 metres. This was the moment the race was won.

Pezcyclingnews.com has their write up available here.

And finally, Cosmo Catalano from cyclocosm has his usual hilarious video wrap.

Coming up on Wednesday – La Fleche Wallone

This Wednesday night in Australia the La Fleche Wallone is on. The first of 2 Belgian Ardennes Classics, you can find a heap of previous race highlights over at cyclingtorrents.nl.

As usual, as soon as cyclingfans.com and steephill.tv have their links up, I will put a post up.

I’ll stick my neck out and say that Enrico Gasparotto wont be able to emulate Phillipe Gilbert and will all 3 in the same year.

3 Thumbs up from Gilbo

A couple of videos from the 2012 Paris Roubaix. One from the winning team, Omega Pharma Quickstep, and one from GreenEDGE who had a less than perfect day.

2012 Amstel Gold Race Live Video, Route, Teams, Results, Photos, TV

Take your time and just check out that podium celebration. See it? Yes, I am talking about the beer! Mr Ring says it best in his excellent race preview when he says…

Giant crowds, 25 different climbs and a brewery as race sponsor, what’s not to like about the Amstel Gold Race?

There may not be kilometres of cobbles or the Poggio or Murr, but the Amstel Gold it is still a belter of a race. Climbs, traffic furniture and massive noisy crowds make for a great spectacle. Pezcyclingnews.com takes a closer look at the roads they will be traveling on.

As usual, you can get all the live action at either Steephill.tv or Cyclingfans.com.

Six Aussies will be starting tonight, Simon Clarke, Cadel Evans, Simon Gerrans, Matt Hayman, Wesley Sulzberger and David Tanner. Good luck to them all.

Cycling Podcasts – What You Should Be Listening To.

I am a bit of a fan of cycling Podcasts. Since I have gotten back into cycling, I have listened to quite a few. Some great, others, well, not the best. I started out listening to Flammecast (itunes link), but they has since folded. My 3 favourites for now are.

Velocast with Scott O’Raw and John Galloway. Excellent podcast by Scott and John. John was the Scottish half of Flammecast. One that page you will see a list of their shows. The current version of the Velocast (itunes link), This Week in Cycling History (itunes link) with Cillian Kelly, Velocast Race Radio and Velocast Classic (itunes link). There is also a new podcast in the works, but I can’t spill the beans on that as yet. But it sounds great.

The FredCast (itunes link) is hosted and produced by David Bernstein. David has a terrific knowledge of the bicycle industry having worked as a bicycle industry executive. The shows may be a little American focused, but I think they are well worth a listen.

The Spokesmen. (itunes link) Hosted by the Fredcast’s David Bernstein, this round table discussion on all things cycling is a very good show. Regular guests include Carlton Reid, Neil Browne, DL Byron and more.

I hope this gets you started with some interesting cycling Podcasts. If you know of others, please leave a comment and I will add them to the list.

Friday Video

A very powerful and well made short film made for a competition leading up to the Olympic Games in London.

From the YouTube description…

BOY,’ written by British Airways Great Britons winner Prasanna Puwanarajah is a moving short film starring actor Timothy Spall and was inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Prasanna won over Richard E. Grant and the panel of judges on the BA Great Britons programme with his clear, original and moving script. The film, now complete, will also be show at our pop up event Flight BA2012 and onboard BA flights in the run up to the London 2012 Games.

Find out more about the film’s production as well as our other Great Britons winners at http://www.facebook.com/britishairways

Thanks to Nigel Richardson and CyclingCentral for the heads up on Twitter.

State of the Roadworks.

Well, the Culburra Road road works are still going along. Nothing has happened in a week, apart from some nasty corrugations starting to appear. This is what I have to ride over on the commute in to and home from work.

I think I will need a cyclocross bike soon. Notice the dickhead flying past blaring the horn at 1:05.

Coming Up This Weekend – Amstel Gold Race

In a new feature of the blog, I am going to try and give people a heads up on the races coming up and give some links to have a look at some videos from previous years.

First up is the weekends Amstel Gold race. To get an idea of what you will see, head on over to cyclingtorrents.nl and search by race. (or use this link if you are lazy) I have asked the site owners if it is ok to link to them and they say it is fine.

I am not going to go over the legalities of it all, it is entirely up to you valued reader. I will say that there are loads of historic videos there that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Once Steephill.tv and cyclingfans.com have their Amstel Gold previews up, I will link to them as well.

Merino Base Layer gets the Thumbs Up.

Wore my new merino base layer from Torpedo 7 this morning. It wasn’t freezing, only got down to 8C, but it was nice to feel toasty warm around the torso and arms.
